my tyres are 235/45/17

235 is the width of the tyre (the bit that sits on the road) in mm

45 is the percentage of the width of the tyre (in this case 45% of 235mm) which makes up the size of your sidewall

17 is the rim size.

45 is the size of the side/wall of the tyre in mm as well, lol man if you had 45% of a 235 wide tyre you would be rollin on alsom 120 mm sidewall get the old ruler out and have a look it will be 23.5 cm across and 4.5 cm in the side wall

my 17's have 205/40 on them so if i was rollin with a 100mm or 10cm sidewall id have 4wd tyres on them

so lets clear it up
if you have a 205/40/r17

205 / largest number = width in mm
40/ = side wall im mm
r17/ = rim diamiter
