Wheels Car of the Year 2008
Mercedes wins Wheels Car of the Year
January 22, 2008 - 6:42PM
The Mercedes Benz C-Class has outpaced a field of 20 models to win the 2007 Wheels Car of the Year award.
Wheels editor Ged Bulmer says the C-class, with an entry price of just under $60,000, outshone its competition with an impressive combination of standard safety features, electronic driver aids, excellent dynamic ability, ride comfort, build quality and attractive design.
All four C-Class models, two of which have diesel engines, were driven in the week-long tests undertaken by Wheels judges.
"What got the C-class over the line was it's an excellent vehicle in every key area," Mr Bulmer said.
"It has a very good range of engines, four different engine options and it's got outstanding fuel efficiency across the range."
He said the C-class had excellent safety credentials and was a very comfortable car for Australian roads.
"Mercedes has done a good job in containing costs and presenting a real value proposition in what is a luxury car set," Mr Bulmer said.
"It's an exceptionally good car - the really impressive thing about the Mercedes is that it is not just a good drive and so polished in so many areas, but the price has been kept to a very reasonable level."
Also in the top three were the Ford Mondeo and the $17,000 Mazda 2.
"The Ford Mondeo is another excellent vehicle and you could make the case that it was unfortunate not to win," Mr Bulmer said.
"It's a terrific new offering from Ford and deserves to sell.
"We have had years gone by where Wheels didn't give awards because we felt there weren't enough cars around to warrant it but that wasn't the case this year."
Other models tested included the Audi A5, BMW M3, BMW X5 Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan X-Trail and the Subaru Impreza.
