Sherwood was first charged with witchcraft in a court case held on March 3, 1697, in which Richard Capps alleged that she had cast a spell on his bull, resulting in the bull's death. There were no findings in the case, but the Sherwoods subsequently sued for defamation, which was dismissed by agreement of the parties.[8] In 1698, Sherwood was accused of bewitching her neighbor John Gisburne's hogs and crop of cotton, and her husband initiated another action for defamation, but again lost.[6][8][14] Elizabeth Barnes, wife of Anthony Barnes, alleged that Sherwood assumed the form of a black cat, entered Barnes' home, jumped over her bed, drove and whipped her, and left via a keyhole or crack in the door.[6][13][20][21]
